Am I proud to be a Filipino?

I got this question from my formspring account and it just made me want to say a lot.

I can just easily say that yes I am without explaining anything. Like how most Filipinos would boast about saying, "I'm proud to be a Filipino". But there's actually more to it than just saying those words. I think me saying, "I am just happy that I am a Filipino" would be more fitting.

Last Thursday, there was an Honors Convocation held in school and I was one of the students given recognition in front of most of the school's faculty, equally talented students and their supportive families and friends. The professor who awarded me told everyone in that hall that I came from the Philippines. And for a second, I heard some "ooohs" and I just showed them the brightest of smiles.

I'm happy I've given the country a heads up but honestly, I am frustrated with the Philippines. I believe the country can really do more if more love is given to it. People just utter the words "I'm proud to be a Filipino" like candies without meaning a thing. The political leaders' motives are always questionable which makes me sad because corruption always pops into the picture. If only these leaders really do something and help most, if not all, citizens cope up with everyday life then at least life would be a little better. If they can just love the country and give it some improvements it deserves. If only they give back to the people who trusted them with their votes. I know it's easy to say but hard to do but this is not just for the executive leaders because the local mayors and governors could really really be useful. I'm just wishing for a true leader who could bring the Philippines back into the global map again. The country would have been so great if it weren't for its mismanagement.

I feel also sad that most rich Filipino kids love Western things so much that any local form of entertainment is seen as bad taste. They watch American TV, all of them, because local TV is too jologs. Mainstream music is too masa, and any minute English grammatical error causes the wildest of reactions. Sometimes I feel bad that people would actually want English to be the main language in the Philippines. The textbooks are in English, the broadsheets are in English while the tabloids are in Tagalog. Whatever happened to Tagalog? Is it too baduy now too? The Filipino culture really suffers and loses its identity as the Philippines become more and more Westernized. My boyfriend always tells me this, that I'm too American and I feel embarrassed.

Filipinos are also all over the world. I know I am guilty of this, leaving the country to pursue personal goals but this is also why I feel so guilty. People are leaving because they're losing hope for the country. It has become too bad that people have to flee for things to get better. This is why I don't want to be an American citizen for now since I feel like I would betray my country even more by doing so. It's too selfish. It's like "kthanksbye Philippines". And how can Chinese American families manage to teach their kids Chinese and English at the same time and Filipino families not so much? Filipinos who grew up abroad don't have a clue what their parents are talking about when speaking in Tagalog.

I'm such a hypocrite I know but this is why I feel so frustrated. Why does it have to be like this? Why can't we just love everything about it and feel proud. I can't just be proud of the Philippines because Manny Pacquiao, Charice Pempengco and the dancing prisoners are from there. I can't just feel proud because I'm from that English speaking Asian country. There's more greatness about the Philippines that I want to tell the world about. The world should hear about the intelligent, creative, hardworking Filipino people. But I only have little proof and support for now. All I hear are corruption, massacres, cheating, poverty and too many negative stuff. But I'm still hoping that one day, I could really be fully and wholeheartedly proud that I am Filipino cause right now I am only happy I'm from there and nothing else.

Liiiiiiiife

It's already mid-March and I haven't posted any significant blog entry yet. Maybe I'm just too lazy to think my own thoughts. Or maybe I'm just exhausted with my life.

I think in a way, I am frustrated with it. It's as if the world is turning, and I'm still the same, doing just fine. I am neither going forward nor backward. I'm just in a standstill and I don't know if this is because of my passion for endless bumming or just plain indecision. I'll be twenty-one this year and I don't even have a driver's license yet. I really do believe that I need to fix my life and start actually doing something about it. I am jealous of other people who are now moving up in their own "life cycle". It's a wake-up call: unless I move, I won't get anywhere.

And this is a big slap in my face.

Bitch, move your ass.

Please.

sup, senioritis

After getting jealous of former blockmates' amazingly flawless graduation pictures, I find out I'm now a senior which means I'll be graduating soon too. Maybe a year left and I'm next in line. And this is scaring me quite a bit. Hah.

I'm not sure I am ready for what's really out there. I haven't had experience and I don't think I already have the guts. Hopefully, I'll score a few internships this fall or maybe summer just so I could feel some confidence. It's really hard when my work experience only consists of meager cashier jobs. Womp womp.

And I'm depressingly broke still. But hopefully, I could work on my laziness on finding out a job soon. Maybe I just don't want to lose a lot of free time in my hands. I'm a bum you know.

What's bothering me most I tell you is being guilty of something I just happen to have. Is it possible to be guilty of having a happy family? Cause believe me I am kind of. My boyfriend comes from a broken family and it's saddening to see him suffer from it. And he doesn't even have any brothers and sisters. I feel like I could never get him out of this misery and I'm frustrated with it.

Anyway, away I go with the second day of the semester. Let me do this.

False Alarm

*Thanks Mike but no need to worry. I am feeling really really better. It's just me and my paranoia.

It's time to delete that post.

Today, I can honestly say that I am now a firm believer in this thing called love. I believe it can really pick you up from the dumps and it can also break you into pieces.

Not much words for an entry but enough to say how I really feel.

yearend round-up

Two things made my 2009 wonderful: Love and Life. Yes, such cliche but it is what it is. I remember last year I was on the brink of severe depression. Ha ha. Nothing interested me. I was such an outcast. I rarely went out. I'd just watch as much movies as I can or read other people's favorite books. Then I'd complain about the death of my social life. And now a year after, I'm overly ecstatic about how my life turned out to be. This year has been memorable to me and I'm thrilled to have finally achieved some form of satisfaction.

Maybe it's my friend's influence on me. Before, I used to think about the future too much. What will happen, what will my parents say. But after my "therapeutic" trip to California, I realized there's nothing wrong about enjoying the present and just thinking about what's for now. Too much thinking can spoil the fun. Now, I just go wherever life takes me. But of course, with necessary precautions.

Yes maybe that's exactly what changed my year. I am now carefree. I am up for anything. I guess that is also the reason why I met my boyfriend. And god I'm so thankful for that. Ha ha.

I don't think I have any resolutions for next year, they're unnecessary. But I would absolutely be light and carefree in life. And I would also eat less and exercise. Yeah, just like what I say every year. Jeez, I'm excited.
